Ducati Diavel parts

The Diavel is a cruiser that up close hardly looks like one: 1,198 cc Testastretta 11°, 162 hp, Brembo monoblocs and a rear tyre 240 millimetres wide. Ducati built it in this form from 2011 to 2018, after which the 1262 cc DVT engine took over. Anyone who rides one notices that the maintenance sits closer to a superbike than to a tourer. For the Ducati Diavel you will find new and used parts with us, from timing belts and tank covers to exhaust silencers and rims.

A superbike engine in cruiser clothing

The Testastretta 11° engine shares its bore and stroke of 106 by 67.9 mm with the 1198 superbike, but has been tamed with calmer valve timing. That delivers 162 hp at 9,250 rpm and 127.5 Nm at 8,000 rpm, while the seat height stays at 770 mm. That combination explains why the wear parts behave differently from what you would expect on a cruiser: the torque arrives early and hard, and you notice that in the final drive.

The Diavel sticks with a chain, whereas the later XDiavel S was given a toothed belt. Chain kits certainly do not last tens of thousands of kilometres here, especially not if the bike is regularly ridden in sport mode. A worn rear sprocket with hook-shaped teeth is one of the most common reasons owners end up in our range of Ducati parts.

1198 or 1198 Dual Spark: which Diavel is in your garage?

In 2015 the Diavel received the Testastretta 11° DS engine with two spark plugs per cylinder, good for 130.5 Nm. More changed than just the cylinder head, and it is precisely those differences that determine which parts fit. This is how you recognise it:

  1. Count the spark plugs. Four of them means Dual Spark, so model year 2015 or later.
  2. Look at the headlight and the radiator shrouds, which are more sharply styled on the second series.
  3. Compare the instrument panel, which was renewed in 2015.
  4. Note the rims and the exhaust system, both revised on the second series.

If you are somewhere in between, the frame number always settles it. In the webshop the parts are grouped by period, with 2011-2015 covering the early years. From 2019 the Diavel 1260 appeared with the 1262 cc DVT engine and a largely new frame, which means parts are rarely interchangeable between the two models.

The desmo service and the parts that go with it

Ducati applies two intervals to the Diavel. For model years 2011 up to and including 2014 the major desmo service falls at 24,000 km, from 2015 at 30,000 km. The intermediate service with oil and filter falls every 15,000 km or every year. That major service involves the following parts as standard:

  • two timing belts and the water pump belt
  • spark plugs, two or four depending on the generation
  • air filter and coolant
  • shims for the valve clearance, for both the opening and the closing rocker arms
  • a service of the rear wheel hub

Do you not know when the belts last came out? They age even without kilometres, and five years is the practical limit. A Diavel with 12,000 km on the clock is therefore not automatically up to date. When buying, always ask for the invoices of the last desmo service, because that quickly saves you a few hundred euros of work you would otherwise still have to have done.

Heat and electronics: what to look out for

Voltage regulator.
An L-twin of 162 hp produces a lot of heat and the regulator does not sit in the coolest spot. Flickering lights, a dashboard that cuts out or a battery that keeps going flat often point in that direction. Machines that have seen a lot of stationary traffic in particular run into this.

Clutch slave cylinder.
The hydraulic clutch works with a slave cylinder that can start to leak after years. A spongy lever or oil around the sprocket cover on the left-hand side are the first signals.

Keyless system.
The Diavel starts with a code key in your pocket. A flat battery in the key or a faulty aerial gives you a bike that does not respond to anything, while there is nothing wrong with the battery.

All three are easy to put right, provided you make the correct diagnosis before you order parts.

Tank covers and trim: much of the Diavel is panelling

What looks like a tank on the Diavel is a set of separate covers over the actual fuel tank. On the Carbon they are made of carbon fibre, on the Cromo they were chrome-plated and on the Dark they have a matt finish. A damaged panel therefore rarely means you need a complete tank. The same goes for the side fairing panels, the radiator shroud and the panels around the rear frame.

The seat and the handlebars also differ per version. The Strada was given higher handlebars, a roomier seat and a windscreen, the Carbon has its own seat and lighter Marchesini rims. In doubt about your version? Then check the part number before you order. Our network of dealers tops up the stock every week, so if the panel you are looking for is not among them today, take another look later among the more than 220,000 parts on Motorparts-online.com.

Frequently asked questions

Do parts from the Diavel 1260 fit the Ducati Diavel?

Usually not. In 2019 the 1260 received the 1262 cc DVT engine, a modified frame and new bodywork, which means both engine and body parts have different numbers. Only with small standard items does it happen that the numbers are the same. So always compare the part number or pass on your frame number.

How often do the timing belts have to be replaced?

At every major desmo service, so at 24,000 km on the first series and at 30,000 km from model year 2015. If you ride little, take five years as the practical limit, because rubber ages even without kilometres. The water pump belt is done in the same service.

Can I adjust the valve clearance myself?

It is not an impossible job, but it is a different one from a normal valve train. Desmodromic valves have both an opening and a closing rocker arm, each with its own shim in fixed thickness steps. You need the right shim set and special tools, plus patience when measuring. Anyone who does not have that is better off doing only the intermediate service themselves.

Is the wide rear tyre awkward when looking for parts?

The 240/45 ZR17 mainly limits your choice of tyre brands, because not every manufacturer supplies that size. The rear rim is also model-specific and differs per version, with the Carbon having lighter Marchesini wheels. With a used rim, always check whether it belongs to your version and year of manufacture.

What do Dark, Carbon, Cromo and Strada mean for the parts?

Those are versions with their own trim, not different technology. The differences are in the tank covers, rims, seat, handlebars and finish, and those parts have their own part numbers. The engine, the brakes and the electronics are the same within the same model year.
