The most striking thing about the 1250 generation is the introduction of BMW ShiftCam, the first variable valve timing in a BMW boxer. In practice the engine behaves like two units in one. At low revs and part load the camshaft uses a profile geared towards smoothness and economy; at higher revs or a fuller throttle opening the camshaft shifts to a second cam profile with more valve lift for maximum power.

The 1250 generation was produced from 2019 to 2023, as the successor to the R 1200 GS Adventure and the forerunner of the R 1300 GS Adventure. The defining difference from the 1200 is the ShiftCam boxer. When ordering parts it is therefore important to stick to the correct generation and year of manufacture.
Many engine and drivetrain components are shared, because both models use the same ShiftCam boxer. Even so, the tank, bodywork, screen and part of the electronics differ. Always check the part number before ordering, certainly for bodywork and tank parts.
ShiftCam is BMW's variable valve timing, which switches between two cam profiles on the intake side. For riding this means more torque low down and more power up top. For maintenance, what matters most is that the valve actuation is more complex than on older boxers, so leave the valve adjustment to a specialist if in doubt.
When buying, pay attention to the service history, the condition of the final drive and any crash damage to the bodywork, bars and hand guards. A complete service booklet often says more about this motorcycle than the mileage alone. Also ask whether all the electronic functions and riding modes work correctly.
